Reading guide: Sharana vachanas on Vachanax
The vachanas collected here belong to the Lingayat (Vachana) movement of twelfth‑century Karnataka—plain‑language lyrics addressing Shiva as Ishtalinga, critiquing hollow ritual, caste arrogance, and gender injustice while praising honest work and interior devotion. Poets such as Basavanna, Akka Mahadevi, Allama Prabhu, Chennabasavanna, and a host of lesser‑known sharanas wrote in rhythmic prose poems that were memorised, sung, and copied across generations.
On this index you can search by Latin or Kannada letters: type an author’s name or a keyword and the preview line shows how your query maps to Kannada script. Each author tile opens a dedicated list of compositions with modern commentary where our editors can supply brief glosses without replacing your own close reading.
Tip: if you are preparing a lesson, pair these pages with the site‑wide About article for historical framing, and cite the printed critical edition you rely on in classroom materials.
